TRAVELLIN' LIGHT

Hello and welcome to Radio Glan Clwyd at 10 0’clock this Sunday morning. This is Patsy Wynne with Good Vibrations… inviting you to share the next hour and a half with me... enjoying my choice of music... which sometimes surprises me... and always delights... HELLO to whoever’s listening in hospital... and to those who may be listening online... WELCOME to you too!
#          Good Vibrations…
I love to travel and Travellin’ Light is the theme of my show today.  When I fly... I like to look down from a window seat on the living map spread out below and see the world from another perspective, arriving at my destination with the promise of exciting changes of scenery, new places to explore and people who look and live differently... not to mention the enjoyment of tasting new and sometimes strange foods. I’m lucky enough to have just had a memorable holiday in Thailand with my sister… actually to visit her son who lives there… and we had a fantastic two weeks… just chilling out… enjoying the warmth of the sun… swimming in the beautiful sea… and eating delicious Thai food.  And even though you may be grounded… and not able to go anywhere at the moment… you can still dream… so come fly with me…
#1        Come fly with me... Michael Buble
During the last century, we’ve become so used to flying... here, there and everywhere. Did you realise that commercial flights started nearly 100 years ago? No, I didn’t either! But in those days, flying was not for the fainthearted, as aircraft had no air-conditioning, so it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The planes were smelly and couldn’t escape the turbulence at lower altitudes... so airsickness was common... adding to the smell!
However, those who were brave enough, not to mention rich enough... took to the skies... and much later… man went to the Moon!
#2        Fly me to the Moon… Sinatra
There are people who will put up with any discomfort, simply for the feeling of excitement and the adventure of travelling abroad. Nowadays, we may complain of restricted space... or delayed flights, but we take it for granted that flying is relatively safe and comfortable and has become a part of modern life... to take us on holiday... or on business... to visit those relatives who emigrated to the other side of the world... I think it’s such an adventure to be leaving on a jet plane...
#3        Leaving on a jet plane... John Denver
However, if you are someone who suffers from a fear of flying... (and by the way, there are techniques that can transform that fear into healthy excitement... that is if you really want to visit your brother in Australia who you’ve not seen for so many years!)... there are other ways to travel... though it may take longer and be more difficult!
I know a young man who fell in love with a young Japanese lady and planned to go to Japan to marry her there. He booked his flight, but on arriving at the airport he was so overcome with fear that he simply couldn’t board the plane and had to return home. However, he was determined to get there and found a way by train... through Europe and then Russia, on the Trans-Siberian railway to Vladivostok, where he took a boat to Japan.  That’s love for you!
If only he’d asked for help to overcome his fear, he’d have saved a lot of money... but on the other hand... the overland journey must have been quite an experience to remember!
#4        Trains and boats and planes... Anita Harris
If you’d prefer to go by road... this form of travel can be even more interesting if you’re prepared to take your time and enjoy meeting people along the way...
#5        Route 66... Nat King Cole
I had the great pleasure of travelling through the USA in an RV... that’s a motor home, with my son and daughter... and we did follow route 66 part of the way back to Denver… after we’d gone through the Rockies to the Grand Canyon... where we took a helicopter ride over this amazing split in the earth... to the strains of this spectacular music...
#6        2001... a Space Odyssey
I have to say that was one of my most emotional experiences, which is hard to explain... it was just so awe-inspiring!  We then followed the long and winding roads through the wide open spaces of Arizona... through Navajo Indian territory... that was a great trip...
#7        The long and winding road... Beatles
Don’t forget that we always welcome your requests for a particular record, or a mention of someone or something special... and if you have an interesting or funny story to tell, connected to a special song... we’d love to hear from you.   You can contact Radio Glan Clwyd by phone on 01745-584229... or if you’re here in hospital, on Extension 4360, or ask one of the volunteers going around the wards. You can also listen online at... www.rygc.co.uk
Do you sing while you’re driving? It’s a great way to keep the kids happy on a long journey and this was one catchy song that we’d sing as we drove those long distances in the States...
#8        Do you know the way to San Jose... Dionne Warwick
Apart from the Beatles, the songs we’ve heard so far are from America... and there are so many American songs dedicated to their towns and states... Chicago... New York... California... Oklahoma! and so many more...
I wonder why we don’t have songs like that about places here in the UK. Why don’t we have such songs?  like... ‘Do you know the way to Birmingham’... or... ‘Manchester... oh, Manchester’...  ‘I left my heart... in Llan-dudno’... that’s a thought, isn’t it?
Actually, I do know one... my kids used to sing this on the way to North Wales on our holidays... many years ago...
#9        Didn’t we have a lovely time, the day we went to Bangor... Fiddler’s dram
OK... songs about places in this country are rare... maybe you know some that I don’t... and here’s another one I found...
#10      The Other Side of Liverpool…  The Pogues ???
Of course, in the old days, those leaving these shores for another country often had little choice... it was a case of leave or die... of starvation and deprivation. But for those that survived the perils of the long sea voyage, there were opportunities for a new and better life in the New World... America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand... so far away from home.
#11      Thousands are Sailing… The Pogues
Travel is all about change... and that can be scary. And yet... when we pluck up our courage and face a challenge... the result can be very rewarding... and nothing is ever quite the same again... we can’t help but change through our experiences. The trick is, to find the positive in every situation... rather than stick to negative old ways of thinking... and that can be quite a challenge.
So having left these shores... let’s sail away to North Africa with Crosby, Stills and Nash... This used to be a favourite destination of young travellers and hippies... which always seemed very remote and mysterious... somewhere in the dusty interior of Morocco...
#12      Marrakesh Express... Crosby, Stills, Nash
I think I’d have been a hippy if I hadn’t been married with young children in the 60’s... but... it’s never too late!  Now, how about somewhere closer to home... this is a golden oldie...
#13      I love Paris... Nat King Cole
That’s somewhere I’d love to visit... just never had the right person to go with. Where shall we go next?... maybe to sunny Spain?  What do you like about Spain? Maybe the beaches and luxurious hotels of the coast? Or maybe you prefer the real Spain... away from the madding crowds... enjoying the local food and joining the locals for tapas and vino. Granada is a busy tourist attraction with its long and interesting history and such a beautiful place to visit... it’s well worth a visit.
#14      Granada... Russell Watson
11.00  NEWS
We have a request! For Gwen from Rich… because they love travelling… and they’re always going somewhere or other…
#14      I’ve Been Everywhere… Johnny Cash
Personally I appreciate the opportunity to go travelling and I count myself lucky to live at this exciting time of change as the world opens up in every way.
Actually we don’t even have to get on a plane, train or motor in order to see the world. Anyone can be an armchair traveller and enjoy seeing other parts of the world in Movies or on TV … I know I do… we can travel around this beautiful country… as well as seeing other countries through the eyes of a presenter… like Michael Palin… and a new series from Joanna Lumley… the other night she was travelling through parts of Greece… where I’ve never been… and it was so beautiful.  We can all dream… But apart from the wonders of modern communications, we can travel in imagination to anywhere we wish... and flights of fancy don’t cost anything at all!
Well, we’ve travelled on both sides of the Atlantic, but as exciting as it is to visit faraway places... it’s always... sooo good to come home again...
#15      Coming Home… Mel Torme
But you know… every time we read a book or watch a movie… or listen to a song… we’re taking a journey into someone else’s mind and imagination… joining in their ideas… philosophies… and dreams… and some dreams come true… and some don’t… but that’s ok…
#16      A Little Travelling Music… Barry Manilow
I started today’s show with the theme of Travellin’ Light… and this time when I went on holiday… I actually managed to get all my clothes in a cabin luggage case… amazing!  But it was only for two weeks.  What really matters is how lightly we travel through life!  Because if we accumulate a load of baggage… materially and emotionally… in our life… it will drag us down… and we’ll get very tired with the weight of all that disappointment… guilt… shame… remorse… anger… resentment… so before it’s too late… take a look at everything you’re carrying… and decide what you can LET GO… right here and now… if you want to travel light…
Those of you who’ve heard my show before will know that I usually give an introduction to EFT... that’s Emotional Freedom Techniques… and the whole point of doing this is to FREE yourself of any emotional baggage that’s been weighing you down…
So now I’d like you to think about what baggage you’d like to let go... any emotional feelings... of disappointment... frustration... anger... resentment… whatever you feel. Now rate that feeling on a scale of 0 to 10... 10 being the very worst feeling you can get. (Write down the number if you can... and name that feeling.)
Start by tapping the fleshy side of your hand... below the little finger... we call that the Karate Chop... and take a long deep breath. Keep tapping and say out loud... if you can..
Even though I’ve been feeling .... disappointed with my expectations of life…
I accept that’s what I’ve been carrying around..
Even though I’ve been  feeling ...resentful...  angry... at what happened…
I deeply and completely love myself anyway…
Even though I’ve been feeling... guilty... for something I may or may not have done…
I forgive myself for carrying this around for so long…
Take another deep breath... and now we start tapping around the face..
1st point... right between the eyebrows... just above the nose... tap with 3-4 fingers... and say... this feeling of… resentment… anger… guilt… whatever…
2nd point... at the side of the eye right on the corner... either side... and repeat... I’ve been carrying this around for so long…
3rd point... under the eye on the cheekbone... this feeling of…
4th point... right under the nose... it’s been so heavy…
5th point... in the cleft of the chin right under the lip... this feeling of…
6th point... collarbone... at the top of the chest... repeat... I didn’t realise how heavy this has been…
7th point...  top of head... and repeat... This feeling of....... who needs it? maybe I could just choose to let it go... because I want to feel lighter…
You know that angels can fly because they take things lightly…
Take note now of how that feeling might have changed.  Has the number gone up or down?
You can repeat that any time on your own… or while we play the next track… so just let go of all that dead weight… and ENJOY what’s left of your life!
#17      I’m Beginning to See the light… Peggy Lee
Now maybe some memories are making you feel tense and uncomfortable… so let’s have a little relaxation…
When you can’t do something to release that tension... this is one way I get to relax... So if you’d like to do this now... only if you can... (not while driving!)... stop whatever you’re doing and follow along with me...
Close your eyes and...  focus on your breathing... slowing down with each breath... for a couple of minutes... breathing slow and easy... relaxing your body... releasing the tension in every muscle... sinking down into the bed or chair... with every breath... and relaxing your mind... letting each thought float by... with every breath... any thoughts floating away like little balloons... only aware of each breath... and my voice... just for the moment... until you feel completely relaxed... free of all bodily sensation... sinking down into a comfortable relaxation... does that feel good...
and NOW... while you’re relaxing... bring to mind someone you really love... or some memory that always makes you feel really happy... or take yourself to a favourite place... somewhere you feel safe and comfortable inside... maybe a favourite place you like to walk... and sink into that warm... comfortable feeling... of connection... with life and nature... where you feel a sense of belonging... and feel that love and joy filling your heart.
NOW... Magnify that feeling in your heart... with every breath... filling your heart with love and joy... like a big pink balloon... and hold that love and joy in your heart... you can tie off the balloon to contain that feeling....... and bring it back whenever you need to remind yourself of how good you can feel.
You know you can do this while you’re lying in bed... or sitting in your chair... bring that feeling into your heart... all those feelings of gratitude for the people you love... even those who’ve moved on... and appreciate your family and friends.  Never forget to express our gratitude for what we have... for whatever and whoever we love and appreciate.
#18      Take me Home Country Roads… John Denver
My time today is coming to an end and I’d like to thank you all for accompanying me on this journey today and I trust you’ve enjoyed my take on Life, the Universe and Everything... I’ll be back next Sunday morning at 10.0’clock… for another journey in music and song, when maybe you’ll be able to join me again... and this is Patsy Wynne signing off for today... from Radio Glan Clwyd...  and remember... #   Always look on the Bright side of Life... Monty Python... (fade)

Thanks Patsy, that brought back memories of my helicopter trip over and down into the Grand Canyon quite a few years ago. We must have used the same company because it was the mention of 2001, A Space Odyssey that hit the spot.

We had a mixture of Nationalities on the chopper and the German girl was given headphones with the commentary in Dutch. The Dutch boy ... well, you get the idea!
